Tips for Choosing Your Engagement Photography Location
Tip 1: Choose Fewer Locations, More Time at Each
The more time you spend in transit, the less time you’re actually taking pictures. The result is fewer images and potentially rushed shots because you’re trying to squeeze multiple locations into a specific time frame. We limit our engagement sessions to two locations for this reason. If you require a third location, an additional hour is necessary to maintain the quality and relaxed pace that produces the best results.
Tip 2: Choose Private or Low-Traffic Locations
Busy public places present complications that many couples don’t anticipate. In crowded areas like Union Square or Pershing Square, it takes time for backgrounds to clear, and at certain times, it’s entirely impossible to get a clean shot. This results in far fewer images and potentially photos with strangers in the background. Beyond the technical challenges, public places aren’t always the most comfortable environments for being in front of the camera. With strangers (and sometimes security) watching, it’s hard to let your guard down and act naturally. This discomfort often shows up in the final pictures.
Tip 3: Choose Simple Locations and Backgrounds
The main goal of an engagement session is to bring out the personalities of the couple and capture their genuine interaction. Often, all that requires is a simple, clean background. Shots of you two laughing and having fun don’t need epic scenery to be meaningful. Some of our most treasured images from client sessions feature nothing more than a plain wall or an open field, allowing the emotion between the couple to take center stage.

Tip 4: Choose Locations without Security or Lighting Restrictions
Many public places limit your ability to use off-camera lights. These locations include Union Square, Pershing Square, Disneyland, many bookstores, and numerous other venues. Off-camera lighting is how we create many of our artistic effects including mood lighting and backlighting. It’s also how we create flattering light for portraits using reflectors and diffused flash. Having restrictions on these techniques limits our ability to utilize all of our skills and tools. Additionally, if a location requires a permit, be sure to factor that into your planning. Sneaking around and getting kicked out of a location significantly affects the flow and overall positive energy of an engagement session.

Understanding Our Traffic Ratings
As you view the locations below, notice that we have indicated traffic and crowd ratings of low, medium, and high. Here’s what they mean:
Low*: Low-traffic areas are great because we have the freedom to use any area at any time without having to wait for crowds to clear. Some clients also feel much more comfortable in these locations without onlookers.
Medium**: Medium-traffic areas can sometimes be busy depending on the weather and day of the week. If it happens to be busy, we may get fewer shots because we have to wait for certain spots to open up.
High***: Shooting here can be a challenge because of the many tourists and photographers utilizing the same space. As a high-traffic location, expect fewer photos because of longer wait times for clear shots.
Engagement Photos at Victoria Beach
Our number one most requested shot is located at Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach. Breathtaking tide pools and stunning sunsets can be found here, creating opportunities for truly dramatic imagery. Victoria Beach also features a unique tower next to the cliff that has become an iconic backdrop for engagement photos. The combination of natural rock formations, crystal-clear tide pools, and golden hour light makes this location exceptionally photogenic.

Best time to visit: Winter (ironically) is the best time to get an image similar to the one found on top of this page. The lower tides during winter months provide better access to the tide pools. Summer and fall require additional planning because access to the tide pools varies due to tide levels. Book well in advance during summer and fall because there are very few days in each month when the tide pools are accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orange County Engagement Sessions
What is the best time of year for engagement photos in Orange County?
Winter and spring are often the best seasons for Orange County engagement photos. Winter provides lower tides for beach access and fewer crowds, while spring brings lush green landscapes and wildflowers to inland locations. Summer works well for couples who want a classic California beach vibe, though you should expect more tourists at popular spots.
How long should an engagement session last?
We recommend planning for at least 90 minutes to two hours for a single location, which allows time for wardrobe changes, multiple backdrops within the location, and a variety of poses. If you want to visit two locations, plan for at least three hours including travel time. Rushing through a session often shows in the final images.
Do we need permits for engagement photos at Orange County beaches?
Many popular locations in Orange County require permits for professional photography, especially beaches in Laguna Beach and state parks like Crystal Cove. Permit requirements and fees change periodically, so we always recommend checking current regulations before your session. Our team can help navigate the permit process for any location you choose.
What should we wear to our Orange County engagement session?
Choose outfits that complement each other without being too matchy. Solid colors and subtle patterns photograph better than busy prints or large logos. Consider the location when selecting your wardrobe: flowing dresses work beautifully at beach locations, while more polished outfits suit urban settings like Downtown Laguna. Bring a second outfit for variety, and avoid brand-new shoes if you’ll be walking on sand or trails.
What time of day is best for engagement photos?
Golden hour, which is the hour before sunset, provides the most flattering and romantic light for engagement photos. We typically schedule sessions to begin about two hours before sunset, giving us time to capture a variety of lighting conditions including that magical golden glow. Sunrise sessions are another option for couples who prefer fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
