History

Originally built in 1927 as the home for the founder of the city of San Clemente, Ole Hanson, Casa Romantica was designed to represent the beauty of the coast and the “California dream.”

Passed down through the hands of multiple families over the years, Casa Romantica is now a public cultural center and beloved wedding and events venue in San Clemente.

From Behind the Lens

What we love about shooting
at Casa Romantica.

🌅
Golden Hour Bluff Views
Casa Romantica's clifftop position offers unobstructed Pacific Ocean backdrops that transform during golden hour—the quality of light here is museum-worthy, casting your couple in warm amber while the ocean glows behind them. We've shot countless venues, and few deliver this combination of natural drama and soft, directional light without any urban distractions.
🏛️
Spanish Colonial Architecture
The terra-cotta tiles, white stucco archways, and 1920s Spanish-Colonial design create naturally framed shots at every angle—doorways become natural vignettes, and the textured walls provide rich visual depth. The historic character gives every photograph an timeless, European elegance that feels intentional rather than forced.
🌳
Romantic Garden Corridors
Manicured gardens and vine-draped pathways provide intimate portrait backdrops with dappled light and layered depth—perfect for capturing romantic moments between ceremonies and receptions. These spaces allow us to create editorial-style imagery that feels both candid and carefully composed.
Common Questions

What couples typically ask.

What's the ideal timeline for photography at Casa Romantica?
We recommend scheduling your ceremony for late afternoon (3-4pm) to capture that legendary golden hour light on the bluffs for portraits. This timing also allows for beautifully lit cocktail hour photography in the gardens before transitioning to reception images as natural light fades. If you're doing a morning ceremony, the soft north-facing light is equally gorgeous—just plan your couple portraits for the gardens where you'll have more directional light.
Where are the most photogenic spots on the property?
The bluff edge overlooking the ocean is obviously stunning, but don't overlook the arched doorways and columns framing interior-to-exterior views—they create naturally composed frames. The garden pathways with climbing vines offer intimate portrait opportunities, and the main courtyard's terra-cotta and whitewashed architecture photographs beautifully during golden hour. We also love capturing details against the tile work and textured stucco walls.
Are there any lighting challenges we should know about?
Midday ceremonies can create strong overhead shadows, so we recommend either a later start time or utilizing the indoor ceremony spaces where arched windows provide beautiful directional light. Reception lighting is crucial here—the open ocean views mean the space can feel dark once sun sets, so coordinate uplighting and string lights with your planner. We always scout the exact ceremony and reception setup weeks in advance to plan our lighting strategy.
What makes Casa Romantica different from other Orange County venues?
Most coastal venues face east or west, limiting golden hour options; Casa Romantica's bluff position captures the sunset over the Pacific in a way that feels almost cinematic. The historic architecture and gardens give you European elegance without feeling manufactured, and the genuine ocean drama—the sound, the light, the scale—is something you simply can't replicate at inland estates. It's a venue that photographs like a destination wedding without leaving Orange County.
What should we know about getting-ready logistics and timing?
Casa Romantica has designated bridal suites, but they're somewhat limited, so coordinate with your planner early about prep-room assignments. We typically photograph getting-ready in natural window light, which works beautifully here given the abundant ocean-facing windows. Plan for extra travel time if your team is split between multiple buildings, and confirm parking arrangements with the venue since lot space is limited on ceremony days.
