Redondo Beach Historic Library Wedding Guide

History is alive at the Redondo Beach Historic Library. The building began way back in the late 1800s as a small reading room for weary sailors and eventually became Redondo Beach’s first free-standing public library.  Designed by architect Lovell Pemberton, the library was built using a combination of Spanish and Dutch colonial styles and features Art Deco moldings along the front façade and an abundance of arched top windows. It served as the public library from 1930 until 1991.

In 1996, after interior remodeling, the library once again opened to the public as an event venue. Situated on the gorgeous ten acres of Veteran’s Park, the space offers not only a spectacular view of the ocean but a luxurious array of amenities and services for weddings of up to 300 people.

From Behind the Lens

What we love about shooting
at Redondo Beach Historic Library.

🪟
Arched Windows Flood Ceremony Space
The abundance of arched-top windows is a photographer's dream—they bathe the ceremony area in soft, directional natural light that photographs beautifully without harsh shadows. We position couples to take advantage of this architectural feature, creating backlit and side-lit portraits that showcase the venue's historic character.
🏛️
Spanish & Dutch Colonial Architecture
The layered architectural styles—Spanish colonial curves paired with Dutch colonial details and Art Deco moldings—create endlessly interesting frames and textures for portraits. Every corner offers a different visual story, from ornate interior details to the facade's geometric richness.
Art Deco Elegance Frames Receptions
The restored Art Deco moldings and interior finishes provide sophisticated, glamorous backdrops for reception photography without feeling sterile. The craftsmanship reads beautifully in candlelit evening shots and adds a vintage-modern aesthetic that elevates every frame.
Common Questions

What couples typically ask.

What's the best timeline for capturing photos at the library?
We recommend a first-look session during mid-morning when north-facing windows provide soft, even light for getting-ready and bride-prep shots. The ceremony typically works beautifully in early afternoon when the arched windows are actively illuminating the space. We'll want to shoot couple portraits during the final hour or two before sunset on the grounds to maximize golden hour light—the historic facade becomes absolutely luminous then.
Where are the most photogenic spots for couple portraits?
The exterior front facade with its Art Deco moldings and arched windows is stunning, especially backlit during golden hour. Inside, the main ceremonial space with those historic windows creates incredible natural-light portraits. The courtyard areas offer architectural interest and softer backgrounds—great for candid couple moments away from guests.
What should we know about lighting and shooting indoors?
The restored interior has excellent ambient light from its historic windows, but we supplement with off-camera flash and reflectors to control contrast and ensure clean reception photography. The Art Deco details photograph beautifully in soft, directional light—we avoid harsh overhead flash which would flatten the venue's elegant character. We scout the exact layout during our pre-wedding consultation to identify the best natural light zones and plan our lighting setup accordingly.
How does the library compare to other Southern California venues?
The library is genuinely one-of-a-kind—its authentic historic architecture and craftsmanship can't be replicated at newer venues. The character reads authentically in photographs without feeling like a theme park. It's perfect for couples seeking vintage elegance with real historical bones, and the Spanish/Dutch colonial hybrid style is rare in Southern California, giving your album a distinctive regional identity.
Is there adequate getting-ready space and parking for our team?
The library offers interior spaces suitable for bride and groom prep, though we recommend confirming room availability with your coordinator since it's also used for events during your timeline. On-site parking is somewhat limited, so we typically advise the wedding party and vendors to arrive early. We coordinate arrival times with you in advance to ensure our photography team and videographers have smooth access throughout the day.
