Alexandria Ballrooms Wedding Guide

About Alexandria Ballrooms

A City of Los Angeles Historical Cultural Monument, the Alexandria Ballrooms have been an LA fixture since 1906, filled with luxurious historic details like delicately painted wood paneling, soaring ceilings, and ornate chandeliers. The ballrooms have had an impressive guest list over the years, playing host to many international dignitaries, Hollywood celebrities, and notable socialites. Over the years, this venue has welcomed Winston Churchill, King Edward VIII, William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Natalie Portman, Beyonce, Pharrell, Nick Jonas, and Nicki Minaj. Charlie Chaplain was married in these very ballrooms. And one of Alexandria’s three ballrooms may be the perfect spot for you to tie the knot and celebrate your marriage.

Alexandria Ballrooms Wedding Ceremony

Any of the three ballrooms would be an elegant space to say your vows. The Palm Court Ballroom and Cocktail Lounge can accommodate 500 standing guests or 260 seated, reception-style. This all-white room exudes Old Hollywood luxury, with its soaring arched ceilings, original chandeliers, and Tiffany skylights.

The King Edward Ballroom, pictured below, features hand-painted gold-leaf ceilings, crystal chandeliers, an ornately carved wooden fireplace, and natural sunlight streaming through skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. Guests can gaze on the festivities below from the balcony terrace in this room that accommodates 400 standing guests or 200 reception-style.

Or if you want a contemporary space to put your own signature on, the Mezz may be just the right place for you. An open, industrial space with exposed brick walls, candle-light iron beams, and a grand marble staircase, the Mezz is perched on the top level of Alexandria Ballrooms with iron-clad skylights and walls of windows that provide wondrous views of Los Angeles. The largest of the three ballrooms, this 14,000 square-foot room can hold 800 cocktail-style or 500 seated for a dinner reception.

One of the perks of this venue is that you are renting the space only to create the wedding of your dreams on a beautiful palate. Decor, flowers, catering, room layout–all of that is your choice. You can craft a stately, traditional blue-and-white reception like the one in the Palm Court pictured below. Or also in the Palm Court, you can add romantic, sumptuous touches like red roses and delicate rose gold vases and candle holders. You can decorate the Mezz with funky, upbeat decor and casual dining or contemporary, minimalist decor coupled with fine dining. The sky’s the limit at Alexandria Ballrooms.

From Behind the Lens

What we love about shooting
at Alexandria Ballrooms.

Ornate Chandeliers Create Magical Golden Light
The Alexandria's signature crystal chandeliers cast warm, diffused light that flatters skin tones and creates natural depth in reception photos. We rarely need to supplement with external lighting during evening celebrations—the venue's vintage fixtures do the heavy lifting beautifully.
🏛️
Historic Architecture Frames Every Shot
Soaring ceilings, delicately painted wood paneling, and ornate moldings provide architectural interest that elevates even simple portraits. The bones of this 1906 landmark mean we can shoot from almost any angle and find a stunning frame.
📸
Multiple Distinct Rooms for Visual Variety
The ballroom complex offers varied backdrops—intimate wood-paneled spaces for bride prep, grand halls for ceremonies, and elegant foyers for cocktail-hour portraits. This diversity lets us build a visually rich story throughout your day without ever leaving the building.
Common Questions

What couples typically ask.

What's the ideal timeline for photography at Alexandria Ballrooms?
We recommend arriving 1–1.5 hours before your ceremony to capture bride and groom preparations in the venue's intimate getting-ready suites, which have wonderful window light. Plan for 60–90 minutes of couple portraits immediately following the ceremony, when the ballroom's natural light is at its peak. Evening receptions photograph beautifully under the chandeliers, so we typically shoot through dinner and dancing without supplemental lighting.
Which rooms at Alexandria are most photogenic?
The Grand Ballroom is breathtaking for ceremonies and group photos, with its soaring ceilings and ornate details. The foyer and adjacent parlors offer intimate, well-lit spaces perfect for couple portraits and candid moments. We also love using the wood-paneled getting-ready rooms for their warm, vintage character—they photograph beautifully with natural window light.
How should we approach lighting during an evening reception?
The Alexandria's vintage chandeliers provide excellent ambient light, so we typically photograph receptions without heavy external lighting, which preserves the venue's historic intimacy. That said, we recommend confirming with the venue about any uplighting or accent lighting they may have installed, as this can add dimension to the ballroom photography. For cocktail hour in the foyer, position guests near windows or existing fixtures to maintain flattering, natural-looking light.
What makes Alexandria Ballrooms unique from other LA venues?
This is one of the few venues in Los Angeles with genuine architectural pedigree—it's a City Historical Cultural Monument that's hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Beyoncé. The painted wood, chandeliers, and ornate details are authentic to 1906, not recreated, which gives photos an unmatched timeless elegance. There's simply no other LA venue that combines this level of historic grandeur with such consistently beautiful, natural light.
Is there adequate parking and getting-ready space for our wedding day?
Alexandria Ballrooms offers on-site and nearby street parking, though we recommend communicating parking details to guests in advance since downtown LA can be tight. The venue includes dedicated getting-ready suites for both bride and groom, with mirrors and beautiful natural light—perfect for capturing preparation photos. Confirm room assignments and access times with the Alexandria team when finalizing your timeline.
