Wedding Ceremony at Fairmont San Francisco

Opened in 1907, with construction delayed due to damage from the legendary 1906 earthquake, the hotel is a legacy feature of the Bay Area. The Fairmont was the first hotel in the entire United States to offer concierge services. It also was the site of the formation of the United Nations in 1945. Tony Bennet first sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” at the Fairmont in 1961. Fairmont San Francisco weddings are full of elegance, meaning, and rich memories that will span a lifetime.

The hotel’s exquisite interior boasts 72,000 square feet of luxurious space for events. You will have many opulent locations to choose from for your wedding. At the Fairmont you can plan a micro-wedding for 20 guests, a massive wedding gala for your 1000 best friends, or anything in between.  Pictured below, The Venetian Room is covered in a gold damask pattern with gorgeous chandeliers throughout and an Indian Mandap set up for the day’s festivities.  The perfect location for an unforgettable evening!

The spacious ballroom is perfect for a custom Mandap. The Mandap serves as the altar for Indian weddings, specifically for Hindu and Jain ceremonies. Wedding ceremonies that take place under a Mandap are an ancient, beautiful custom, with the bride and groom seated on the royal chairs for their big day. What we love about shooting
at Fairmont San Francisco.

🌅
Golden Hour Skyline Backdrop
The Fairmont's Nob Hill perch offers an unobstructed western exposure that bathes the exterior in warm, directional light during golden hour—perfect for couple portraits with the Transamerica Building and Bay Bridge glowing in the background. This is rare San Francisco gold that most venues simply cannot deliver.
🏛️
Architectural Drama Built In
The Fairmont's classical Beaux-Arts facade, ornate details, and grand proportions create natural framing and depth for every shot. We leverage the hotel's iconic arches, columns, and stone work to add dimension and elegance without relying on heavy editing.
💎
Refined Indoor Ceremony Light
The grand ballrooms feature soaring ceilings with soft, diffused natural light from tall windows that eliminates harsh shadows during ceremonies. The neutral, elegant interiors act as a perfect canvas that keeps focus on the couple while maintaining the venue's sophisticated character.
Common Questions

What couples typically ask.

What's the best timeline for capturing the Fairmont's photographic potential?
We recommend a first-look session or bride prep finishing around 4:00 PM to allow for at least 45 minutes of golden hour couple portraits on the exterior before ceremony. If your ceremony is in the late afternoon, we'll position ourselves to capture that warm, directional light on the facade during the recessional. For evening receptions, arriving early allows us to shoot the empty ballroom in natural light before guests arrive—these architectural details sing in afternoon window light.
Where on the property should we plan for the best portrait shots?
The exterior north and west elevations are our top picks—the Fairmont's grand arches and stonework frame beautifully, and the open plaza gives us flexibility for full-length and detail shots with the skyline as a secondary element. The interior grand staircase and colonnade halls are stunning for getting-ready and detail photography. We also love the elevated terrace areas that overlook the bay; these provide intimate couple portraits without crowds.
How does the Fairmont compare photographically to other San Francisco venues?
The Fairmont's unmatched advantage is its elevation on Nob Hill combined with historical architecture—very few Bay Area venues offer both iconic skyline backdrops AND classically elegant interiors in one location. Many San Francisco venues sacrifice either the views or the refined architectural character; the Fairmont delivers both, which means less post-processing and more naturally stunning images throughout the day.
Are there any lighting challenges we should know about for indoor ceremonies?
The ballrooms are beautifully lit, but if you're choosing a space away from windows, we'll need to bring supplemental lighting to maintain the venue's elegance and avoid flat, dull tones in couple portraits. We always scout with the Fairmont's events team beforehand to plan for this and ensure we're capturing the venue's refined aesthetic regardless of natural light availability.
What should we know about access and logistics for photography?
The Fairmont is excellent about photographer access—their events team is collaborative about timing for couple portraits on exterior spaces, and they allow early setup in ceremony and reception rooms. Valet parking is available, and we recommend communicating your shot list with the venue coordinator 2-3 weeks prior to confirm access to all areas you're envisioning. The hotel can accommodate multiple photography teams and has dedicated getting-ready suites that are spacious and naturally lit.
